Acclimatization Guide
Kaza sits at 12,500 ft. Here's how to enjoy it safely — from the team that has hosted thousands at altitude.
8 Essential Tips for High Altitude
Hydrate Aggressively
Drink 3-4 liters of water per day. Dehydration worsens altitude sickness. Our cafe serves unlimited herbal tea.
Ascend Gradually
If driving from Manali, stop overnight at Keylong (10,000 ft) before pushing to Kaza (12,500 ft). Give your body time.
First Day = Rest Day
Don't do anything strenuous on your first day in Kaza. Walk slowly, eat lightly, and sleep early.
Avoid Alcohol & Smoking
Both impair oxygen absorption. Stick to water, juice, and butter tea for your first 2 days.
Eat Light & Carb-Rich
Your body needs easy-to-digest energy. Soups, rice, and bread are ideal. Our cafe menu is designed for this.
Garlic Soup Remedy
A local remedy — garlic is believed to thin the blood and improve oxygen flow. We serve it at Delek Cafe.
Carry Diamox
Consult your physician before the trip. Diamox (Acetazolamide) can help prevent AMS when taken prophylactically.
Know When to Descend
If symptoms worsen after 24 hours of rest, descend immediately. The nearest hospital is in Reckong Peo (180 km).
Know the Symptoms
Mild AMS
Action: Rest, hydrate, take Diamox (consult doctor first). Usually resolves in 24-48 hours.
Moderate AMS
Action: Descend immediately to lower altitude. Seek medical help. Do NOT continue ascending.
Severe AMS (HACE/HAPE)
Action: MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Evacuate to lower altitude immediately. Administer oxygen if available.
