How to Reach Kaza

Complete route guide from Delhi, Manali, and Shimla — with distances, road conditions, and travel tips.

June to October only

From Manali

Distance: 200 km

Travel Time: 10-12 hours

Route

Rohtang Pass (13,051 ft) → Gramphu → Batal → Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft) → Losar → Kaza

The most scenic route. Crosses two high passes with stunning views. Road is unpaved for long stretches — only SUVs and bikes recommended. The Manali-Rohtang route requires an Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass permit.

Pro Tips

  • Start early (5 AM) to avoid traffic at Rohtang
  • Carry extra fuel — no petrol pumps between Manali and Kaza
  • Road remains closed November to May
Year-round (winter delays possible)

From Shimla (via Kinnaur)

Distance: 412 km

Travel Time: 14-16 hours (2 days recommended)

Route

Shimla → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza

The all-season route. Follows the Sutlej and Spiti rivers through lush Kinnaur Valley. Better roads but longer distance. Stop at Kalpa or Nako for an overnight break.

Pro Tips

  • This is the only winter route to Kaza
  • Stop at Chitkul (last Indian village) as a detour
  • Beautiful apple orchards between Rampur and Kalpa
Depends on chosen route

From Delhi

Distance: 700 km (via Manali) / 800 km (via Shimla)

Travel Time: 2-3 days
